As many of you know, Habitat PBC’s longtime CEO, Bernard (Bernie) Godek has recently retired. I share this news with both regret for our affiliate and enthusiastic well-wishes for his next chapter. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank Bernie for his 15 years of service and recognize a few of his many accomplishments.
Since Bernie started with Habitat in 2007, his leadership, determination and passion for the mission have propelled the affiliate to become one of the most respected and successful non-profit affordable home builders and home repair providers in Palm Beach County. As a result, Habitat has been able to provide for a better life and a better future for over 450 lower income families in our community.
Bernie was recognized in 2020 by The Palm Beach Illustrated as one of Palm Beach County's top 100 Most Influential Business Leaders, and Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County (HFHPBC) was recognized in 2021 as one of the top 50 performing large Habitat affiliates out of 1,150 nationwide.
Under Bernie's Leadership, HFHPBC was one of only three Habitat affiliates nationwide to be selected by AARP to pilot and eventually implement its new home repair education and awareness program for senior citizens. He led the creation and implementation of the affiliate's nationally recognized new homeowner education program and its neighborhood revitalization program. HFHPBC is often asked to speak about the tremendous success of these programs at regional, state, and national affordable housing symposiums and conferences.
Bernie's retirement heralds a new chapter at Habitat PBC. I am pleased to announce that our internal succession plan is in effect with the announcement of Peter Gates, former COO of the Affiliate, who has now assumed the role of CEO. Peter brings years of experience and passion to the forefront of our mission and I am confident he will lead us forward. I am also pleased to announce that along with the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County and Habitat International, we have signed a Letter of Intent to explore the creation of a combined affiliate to address affordable housing in greater Palm Beach County. The creation of the combined affiliate would create a streamlined and unified organization to support resolutions to the significant affordable housing crisis throughout Palm Beach County.
Bernie was influential in paving the way for this next exciting step forward. We are confident that the synergies between our organizations will allow us to better serve our partner families and increase access to affordable, safe housing. Like Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County, we serve our local community through our mission to build homes, community and hope.
Thank you, Bernie, for all your dedicated years of service and we wish you all the very best in your retirement.
President, Board of Directors
