JUPITER — The South Florida PGA Foundation has partnered with Habitat for Humanity for the second straight year to build a home for a family in need.
Through a $50,000 donation to the organization's Palm Beach County chapter, the foundation will sponsor construction of a single-family home as part of Habitat's Kennedy Estates II project on the south side of Jupiter Gardens Boulevard.
Last year, the foundation supported Habitat's efforts to refurbish a single-family home at San Carlos Park in Fort Myers.
"Our section boundaries extend to both coasts of Florida," foundation executive director Geoff Lofstead said. "One of our goals for the foundation was to try and identify a nationally branded charity that we could affect in different areas of the section.
"Our goal is to kind of move from east coast to west coast, hopefully on a yearly basis."
The Kennedy Estates II development will include a total of 19 1,000-square-foot homes and will house approximately 38 adults and 47 children when completed by next summer, Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County Executive Director Bernard Godek said. Home construction is expected to begin in about 60 days.
To qualify for a house in Kennedy Estates II, a family of four must have an annual household income between $21,700 and $57,900. The family must have regular income for the 30-year, interest-free mortgage and must donate up to 500 hours of sweat equity to build the house.
A handful of families already have qualified, Godek said.
"It's a rather popular project," he said. "People enjoy living up in the Jupiter area."
South Florida PGA Foundation staff members plan to remain engaged with the project through its construction phase, Lofstead said.
"Our overwhelming theme is the ability to use golf to positively affect the community," he said. "The sport of golf gives us the platform to raise money and make a difference."
